2017 ANGEL FOOD CAKE CONTEST RULES

1. Open to any individual who is a Pennsylvania resident.

2. Entrants may NOT have won 1st place in this Angel Food Cake contest at any other fair in 2017.

3. Entry must be an Angel Food Cake made from “scratch”.

4. Pennsylvania produced & packed eggs are requested to be used if at all possible. Please look for the PEQAP or PA Preferred logo or PA packaging dates on the carton.

5. Refrigeration is NOT available at the Fair or PA Farm Show. Entries that require refrigeration after baking must indicate so in the recipe. Those entries will not be sold, auctioned or otherwise distributed for consumption after judging for food safety reasons.

6. The entire cake entry must be submitted for judging on cardboard. (All pans, plates and dishes are considered to be disposable and will not be returned.)

7. Recipe(s) listing the ingredients and the preparation instructions must be submitted with the entry (printed on one-side of 8-1/2″ x 11″ size paper).

Entrant’s name, address & phone # must be printed on the back of the page. (All recipes and cakes will become the property of the Fair or PA Farm Show and will not be returned.)

8. Judging will be based on the following criteria:

Flavor (smell, taste, flavoring) 30 points
Inside Characteristics (texture & lightness) 25 points
Overall Appearance (surface, size, color)
20 points
Creativity 15 points
Topping, Icing or Decoration 10 points

PRIZES: 1st = $25 2nd = $15 3rd = $10

2017 BLUE RIBBON APPLE PIE CONTEST

1. Open to any individual who is a Pennsylvania resident; only one entry per person.

2. Entrants may NOT have won 1st place in this Blue Ribbon Apple Pie contest at any other fair in 2017.

3. Entry to be a pie that must include at least 60% apples in the filling. It does not need to be a “traditional” two crusted apple pie and it can have a variety of fillings.

4. The entire pie must be submitted for judging in a disposable pie pan. (All pans, plates and dishes are considered to be disposable and will not be returned.)

5. The recipe for the pie and pie crust must be submitted with the entry. It should be submitted on one side of 8 ½” by 11” paper. The recipe must list all the ingredients, quantities and the preparation instructions. Entrant’s name, address and phone number must be printed on the back of all the pages.  (All recipes and pies will become the property of the Fair or PA Farm Show and will not be returned.)

Flavor 30 points
Filling: consistency, doneness, moistness and flavor 25 points
Crust: color, flavor, texture, doneness 20 points
Overall Appearance 15 points
Creativity 10 points
Total 100 points

NOTE: Creativity is essential to a varied competition. Do not limit your contest to a “traditional” two-crusted apple pie.

We are looking for a variety of fillings in the pies; the pie must include at least 60% apples in the filling.

The recipe for the pie and pie crust will also need to be submitted when entering at the PA Farm Show.

The certified first place winner from each fair will have the opportunity to enter an apple pie in the BLUE RIBBON APPLE PIE CONTEST at the 2018 PENNSYLVANIA STATE FARM SHOW.

NOTE: If an individual has already won 1st place at another fair in 2017 for this Blue Ribbon Apple Pie contest, that individual is now considered qualified through that Fair to compete at the 2018 PA Farm Show and is no longer eligible to enter this contest at any upcoming Fairs.

2017 HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE CAKE BAKING CONTEST

RULES:

1. Participant must be an individual amateur baker who is a Pennsylvania resident. One entry per person.

2. Entrants may NOT have won 1st place in this Homeade Chocolate Cake contest at any other fair in 2017.

3. Entry must be a layered chocolate cake made from “scratch” Pre-made mixes are not acceptable.

4. Entry must be frosted and frosting must be made from “scratch”.

5. Cake recipe must feature chocolate or cocoa as a main ingredient.

6. The entire cake entry must be submitted for judging on cardboard or other food safe disposable setting.  (All pans, plates and dishes are considered to be disposable and will not be returned.)

7. Recipes must be submitted with the entry, printed on one side of 8-1/2” x 11” paper. Recipe must list all ingredients, quantities, and the preparation instructions. Entrant’s name, address and phone number must be printed on the back side of all the pages. (All recipes and cakes will become the property of the Fair or PA Farm Show and will not be returned.)

Inside Characteristics (even grain, evenly baked; free from air pockets) 20 points
Outside Characteristics (consistent shape/size/surface; overall appeal) 15 points
Frosting (taste, texture, even color) 10 points
TOTAL 100 points

2017 PA PREFERRED™ JUNIOR CHOCOLATE COOKIE, BROWNIE OR BAR BAKING CONTEST

RULES:

1. Exhibitor must be an individual amateur baker (age 8 through and including 18 years ONLY) who is a Pennsylvania resident. One entry per person.

2. Entrants may NOT have won 1st place in this PA Preferred™ Junior Chocolate Cookie, Brownie, Bar baking contest at any other fair in 2017.

3. Entry must be a plate of six (6) cookies, brownies or bars.

4. Entries must be made from “scratch”. Pre-made mixes are not acceptable.

5. PA Preferred™ ingredients must be used in the recipe. A comprehensive list of acceptable products will be available on the PA Preferred™ website. www.papreferred.com Recipes are to include three (3) out of the five (5) items listed here:

a. Grains such as flour or oats d. Dairy such as milk, cream or butter
b. Fruit such as peaches, apples or berries e. Eggs
 c. Vegetable such as zucchini or carrots

6. Entry must be submitted for judging on a food safe disposable setting.   (All pans, plates and dishes are considered to be disposable and will not be returned.)

At least one (1) ingredient must be a PA Preferred® product. Ingredient is to be identified as “PA Preferred®” with its brand name in the cookie-brownie-bar recipe. (ex: PA Preferred Eggs – Weis brand; PA Preferred Milk- Galliker’s brand; PA Preferred Berries – Strife’s Orchards). All package labels from the PA Preferred ® product(s)used, including the name of the product, must accompany the recipe. Look for the blue and yellow PA Preferred® logo on the ingredient packaging to ensure that the product was produced in Pennsylvania. Please note some packaging may not have the blue and gold logo. A list of PA Preferred® producers can be found at www.pafairs.org under “Members-Baking Contest”. You can also search for products at www.papreferred.com.

7.Recipe(s) must be submitted with the entry, printed on one side of 8-1/2” x 11” paper. Recipe must list all ingredients, quantities, and the preparation instructions. PA PreferredTM ingredients are to be identified in writing as “PA Preferred” along with the brand name in the recipe (ex: PA Preferred Eggs – Weis brand; PA Preferred Milk – Galliker’s brand; PA Preferred Berries – Strite’s Orchards). Entrant’s name, age, address and phone number must be printed on the back side of all the pages. PA PreferredTM product labels should be attached to the recipe. (All recipes and cookies-brownies-bars will become the property of the Fair or PA Farm Show and will not be returned.)
